Oil Painting Workshop
March 20 & 21, 2010

This exciting two day workshop focuses on the new mediums, pigments and materials available to today's oil painters.  There
will be a painting demonstration followed by an open workshop.  Both traditional and water mixable oils may be used in this workshop.
This course is limited to 10 students.

This workshop is limited to a maximum of twelve students.  Instruction will be by group demonstrations and individual
instruction.  Subject matter will be the choice of each artist but a model will be available for the second class for
those wishing to paint from the figure.

High Realism in Acrylics


Monday July 5 - Friday July 9, 2010
9am - 4pm

This course will teach you how to take advantage of the unique properties of acrylic paints to create stunning realistic
paintings.  Starting from the initial concept through to the finished painting you will learn the principles of drawing,
composition, value and colour that are the keys to realism.  Instruction will be by in-class demonstrations and lectures. 
At the conclusion of this course, you will have gained new skills and enhanced confidence in your work.

Monday July 19 - Friday July 23, 2010
9am - 4pm

This course will focus on studio painting and how you can build a technically sound painting using the knowledge that Doug has
accumulated over the years.  Starting with sketches and studies leading to the completed painting, you will learn
how to "build a painting"  taking advantage of the unique properties that has made oil paint the choice of artists
over the centuries.  Alla prima and classical methods of oil painting will be taught.  You will learn how to use proper
grounds, mediums, colour mixing, pigments, brush control, glazing, and final varnishing.  Instruction will be by group
demonstrations and personal attention making this course suitable for beginners and experienced artists.

In Part II of this popular course, learn the painting secrets and techniques of Singer Sargent, Jackson, Harris, Wyeth,
Pollock and Rothko.  Professional artist Doug Purdon will show you how to look at the works of these six artists with a
painter's eye.  He will conduct demonstrations that allow you to see the techniques and methods used in the studios of these
greats.  Experience these modern masters in a new way.  This course is appropriate for those who have taken Part I, but
that is not a prerequisite for Part II.

MISTRESSES and MUSES
Love Lives of the Great Artists

Some were wives, some were mistresses, some were patrons, and some were complete strangers glimpsed once from afar.  All
of them inspired great works of art.  This course will examine the lives of the muses of a dozen artists and the masterpieces
they inspired.  Discover who influenced whom and how; who loved whom and why.  Some of the artists to be
considered this year are Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Augustus John, Man Ray, Andy Warhol and Alex Colville.
